History and symbols of Taiwan
Taiwan is an island located 180 km east of mainland China. Until the Dutch and Spanish colonized it in the 17th century, it was inhabited by aborigines. After colonization, mass “Han” immigration from the mainland now forms the largest ethnic group. The island was part of the Tungning Kingdom and then the Qing Dynasty. It was later lost to Japan in 1895 during the Sino-Japanese War.
Today, Taiwan enjoys a blend of traditional Chinese culture, Japanese history and Western influence. This splendid island enjoys subtropical temperatures in the north, central temperate mountainous regions and a tropical climate in the south. This unique cycling experience will take you through all these different climates, through a variety of national parks and along the South China Sea.
Expect a very hilly tropical racing experience. In November, you can expect hot and humid weather, although not as hot as during the summer months.
