1. Appropriate clothing

Temperatures on the Jordan Bike Trail can vary significantly between day and night. During the day, temperatures can reach 15°C, while at night, they can drop below freezing.

  • Base Layer: A thermal top to keep warmth close to the body.
  • Jerseys: A short-sleeve jersey for the day and a long-sleeve jersey for the night.
  • Bib Shorts: Comfortable shorts for long rides.
  • Wind Jacket: Essential for protection against wind and temperature drops.
  • Rain Jacket: To handle any potential rain.
  • Leg Warmers: To keep legs warm during cold nights.
  • Gloves: A pair of short gloves for the day and long, thick gloves for cold nights.
  • Beanie: A light beanie for wearing under the helmet during the day and a warmer one for the night.
  • Socks: Two pairs of socks, one light for the day and one thick for the night.

2. Bike equipment

A suitable and well-equipped bike is crucial for overcoming the challenges of the Jordan Bike Trail, including sandy sections and significant elevation changes.

  • Bike: A Gravel or lightweight MTB with a robust frame, such as a Curve GRX titanium bike or an OPEN Wi.DE carbon frame.
  • Drivetrain: A reliable drivetrain like the Shimano GRX group set or an SRAM electronic group set for smooth shifting.
  • Wheels and Tires: Tubeless tires, 42 mm (Schwalbe G1 Ultra Bite) or 47 mm (WTB Byway), for better traction on various terrains.
  • Saddle: A comfortable saddle like the Brooks Cambium or ISM saddle to avoid discomfort on long distances
  • Lights: A powerful front light like the Supernova Airstream and rear lights for night safety.
  • Bags: Waterproof saddle bags, like the 17-liter Ortlieb, for carrying equipment.
  • Handlebars: No aerobars for this type of adventure, but ergonomic grips for comfort.

Being prepared for potential mechanical failures is essential.

  • Spare Tubes: Even with tubeless tires, carrying spare tubes is prudent.
  • Bike Pump: A compact but effective pump.
  • Tire Levers and Patches: For quick repairs in case of punctures.
  • Multi-tool: A multifunction tool for adjustments and repairs.

3. Food and hydration

Self-sufficiency in food is crucial for a multi-day bikepacking trip.

  • Freeze-dried Food: Lightweight and easy-to-prepare meals.
  • Energy Bars and Gels: For quick energy boosts.
  • Salty and Sweet Snacks: To vary your diet and avoid food monotony.

Hydration is vital, especially in a desert environment.

  • Water Bottles and Hydration Pack: High-capacity water bottles and a hydration pack.
  • Water Filters or Purification Tablets: To purify water from local sources.

4. Camping Equipment

Even if night stops are short, having suitable equipment is important.

  • Sleeping Bag: A light but warm sleeping bag suitable for nighttime temperatures.
  • Tent or Bivy Bag: A minimalist shelter like a bivy bag for protection against the elements.
  • Sleeping Mat: A compact and lightweight mat to insulate from the cold ground.

5. Electronics and Navigation

Navigation and documenting your journey are essential.

  • GPS and Maps: A reliable GPS like the Sigma Rox and paper maps in case of electronic failure.
  • Camera and GoPro: To capture the adventure.
  • External Battery (Power Bank): To recharge electronic devices.
  • Mobile Phone: For emergencies and additional navigation.

The Jordan Bike Trail is a demanding adventure that requires thorough preparation and the right equipment. By following this list, you will be better prepared to face the challenges of this unique expedition. The key is to find a balance between lightness and functionality so that every gram of equipment is justified and optimized. Happy trails and let the adventure begin!
