The fifth and final day of the BikingMan portugal 2023 came to an end with the last participants crossing the finish line, completing the 1,000 km course. Between laughter and tears, the final hours saw a succession of staggered finishes, moving testimonials and challenges met in an atmosphere of resilience. Let’s take a closer look at Friday, when each cyclist fought a personal battle to complete this demanding adventure.
Staggered arrivals: A night and morning of suspense
The fifth and final day of BikingMan Portugal 2023 concluded with the last participants crossing the finish line, completing the grueling 1,000 km route. Between laughter and tears, the final hours were marked by staggered arrivals, moving testimonies, and challenges overcome in an atmosphere of resilience. This Friday was a day where every cyclist fought their own battle to complete this demanding adventure.
The night from Thursday to Friday saw a series of intense arrivals. From 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., cyclists reached the finish line in Faro, each marking the end of this extraordinary event in their unique way. Cyclists like Cyril shared their apprehensions about these final hours:
“Come Monday, we’ll be back at work, so I’m savoring every moment. If I hold back now, I’ll regret it.”
His riding companion agreed, cherishing the last kilometers as a moment to be enjoyed.
The challenge of the final 100 kilometers for the last participants
For the remaining participants, the journey continued under the scorching sun and steep climbs of southern Portugal, a region notorious for gradients as steep as 20%. By midday, those still on the road faced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, making each pedal stroke a struggle.
In this final stretch, Frédéric Le Gall, who had been struggling since day 2, finally reached Faro in the afternoon. His arrival was deeply emotional as he reflected on his falls and a malfunctioning GPS that caused numerous delays:
“It was an absolute nightmare. Endless climbs, a temperamental GPS… but I’m so happy to finish.”
For Frédéric, this achievement carried a profound personal significance. He completed the challenge in honor of the Kerpap association, which supports children with disabilities who play powerchair football—a cause close to his heart after overcoming a severe road accident a few years ago.
“I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. When I joined Kerpap, I understood the importance of resilience and the strength these kids gave me. Today, I want to show them that no matter the obstacles, we can rise again.”
Strategy and heat: The final refueling stop
The final hours of the race pushed cyclists to their limits, particularly with challenging weather conditions. At the last refueling stop before the finish line around midday, several riders shared their tips for coping with the oppressive heat. Cyril and Justin, longtime friends, humorously recounted their method of staying cool:
“We stopped at a grocery store, grabbed ice, and stuffed it into our helmets and collars. It was our mobile AC!”
Such improvised refueling strategies were essential for the cyclists. The heat not only took a physical toll but also tested their determination and morale. Some described their mental state after nearly nonstop pedaling through the nights:
“My spirits are shaky, but I can feel the finish line is near. The human body is truly incredible. Despite the heat and fatigue, there’s still some energy left.”
The arrival of Zenobia De Jongh and the solidarity of the finishers
As dusk fell over Faro, Zenobia De Jongh, a cyclist from South Africa, arrived to cheers from her fellow participants. Her companions, who had finished earlier, waited to share this moment with her. Despite the challenges she faced, Zenobia displayed admirable strength, embodying the spirit of resilience that defines BikingMan.
The closing atmosphere, filled with joy, intensified as cyclists exchanged their experiences—moments marked by camaraderie and mutual support developed throughout the event.
Recap of the general classification: Inspiring performances
Of the 85 participants who started, 76 managed to complete the route within the 120-hour time limit. The statistics reflect the immense effort, particularly for the leading cyclists.
Sébastien Bouchet, who finished in 40 hours and 45 minutes, claimed first place in the general classification and shared his thoughts:
“I’m happy to have finished first, but for me, the goal was simply to complete the race. The fainting spell I had in a supermarket reminded me that nothing is guaranteed, but I told myself if I kept going, everything would be fine.”
Laurianne Plaçais, first in the solo women’s category, described the emotional complexity of the race:
“It’s a mix of freedom and pain. On the bike, you feel an intense sense of life, but the nights were hell. I never thought I’d finish fourth, especially given the level of this year’s competitors.”
Meanwhile, Cédric Sachet and Gwenaël Pagot dominated the pairs category. They reflected on the constant adjustments and mutual support that were essential to overcoming moments of fatigue:
“In a team, you can’t afford to let yourself slip. When one of us faltered, the other provided motivation. It’s a dynamic that helps you stay on course.”
Looking ahead to the next challenge: BikingMan Corsica
With the conclusion of BikingMan Portugal 2023, one chapter closes, but for the most determined participants, the adventure is far from over. The next challenge, BikingMan Corsica, will take place from May 29 to June 3, 2023, offering a new test in the heart of the Corsican mountains, where riders will face equally demanding conditions.
An adventure beyond the sporting challenge
This final day in Faro symbolizes much more than a cycling race. For every participant, BikingMan is a transformative human experience—a journey of endurance and self-discovery. The heat, steep climbs, and sleepless nights did not break their will. Those who crossed the finish line carry with them intense memories, delivering a message of resilience and solidarity.
This adventure will remain unforgettable, reminding everyone that no matter the obstacles, it is always possible to go further. Every cyclist, whether they finished first or last, embodies the spirit of BikingMan and already inspires future participants to take on the next challenge.
