A mountainous challenge with no assistance

Like all events in the BikingMan series, the Sri Lanka race features a 1,000 km course, designed to take riders through some of the most challenging and scenic terrain in the region. With its mountainous landscapes, the route ensures that participants face significant climbing, testing both their physical and mental endurance.

The race’s unsupported format means that cyclists must rely entirely on themselves for food, water, navigation, and repairs. Axo emphasizes that “all things that can go wrong do go wrong,” requiring riders to improvise and adapt on the go. This self-reliant approach adds to the adventure, as participants learn to handle unpredictable situations.

Unique challenges of Sri Lanka

Riders face a variety of unique challenges in Sri Lanka, including extreme heat. Many participants arrive from colder climates, making the adjustment to Sri Lanka’s tropical conditions particularly difficult. The combination of high temperatures and mountainous terrain makes the race exceptionally demanding, pushing the body beyond its usual limits.

One participant shared their experience of riding for 22 hours, describing the difficulty of cycling alone at night on narrow roads, which added an element of fear to the journey. Despite these hardships, the race offers moments of deep beauty and emotion, as participants connect with the landscapes and the spirit of the adventure.

A well-organized and unforgettable adventure

BikingMan Sri Lanka is praised for its well-organized structure, which ensures that participants can focus on the experience itself. The support of partners like SriLankan Airlines has been instrumental in making the event a success, providing logistical backing for the race.

Cyclists describe the experience as “wonderful” and “very emotional,” highlighting the unique blend of physical challenge, cultural immersion, and natural beauty. The race feels like an escape to “another world,” offering participants a chance to disconnect from their routines and push themselves in an extraordinary setting.

The spirit of BikingMan: adventure and endurance

BikingMan Sri Lanka encapsulates the essence of the BikingMan World Series, blending exploration, endurance, and self-reliance into a singularly unique experience. For those seeking an epic cycling adventure, the race offers a chance to test physical and mental limits while discovering the stunning beauty of Sri Lanka’s landscapes.

Whether you’re a seasoned ultra-cyclist or an adventurer looking for a new challenge, BikingMan Sri Lanka promises an unforgettable journey through the pearl of the Indian Ocean.

A challenging night for some participants

The day began early—or rather continued for some—like Indian ultracyclist Amit Samarth, who faced an especially difficult journey. After losing his way multiple times and battling torrential rain in the final kilometers, he shares his adventurous tale:

“Last night, everything seemed so simple. I was close to the finish, then things got complicated. It was raining so hard I couldn’t navigate properly with my GPS. I ended up at a police station to recharge my lights and had to retrace my steps.”

This account captures the challenges of that last night, where each rider had to dig deep to keep going.

The challenges of the final stretch

On the final stretch, Axel Carion joined the cyclists by bike to meet them along the way. The route from checkpoint 3 at Tissamaharama to Panadura (the finish) spanned 306 km, with secondary roads, irrigation canals, and intense heat. Axel Carion described the specifics of this segment:

“Participants have to follow a maze of secondary roads and tracks along irrigation canals. It’s the hottest part of the course, with high humidity. Mentally, it’s a challenge to stay on course until the end.”

Despite the exhaustion, participants kept moving forward, savoring every moment:

“I felt a real connection with the people—even the youngest kids were smiling. I saw kids offering me an apple just when I needed it. These small gestures make all the difference,” says Alain Broglia.

The last finishers cross the finish line

While some were still battling along the roads, others crossed the finish line, completing the 1,000 km journey. The top 10 finished in the early morning, and many shared their reflections:

“This BikingMan is unique because you don’t see the country like a regular tourist. You’re truly connected with the locals, eating in places you’d never think to go, and it’s as much a cultural challenge as it is physical.”

Another rider, Adrien Leroux, expressed his gratitude toward the Sri Lankan people:

“They helped us, guided us, some even offered us a roof for the night. Their hospitality was essential to reaching the finish!”

The life lessons of BikingMan Sri Lanka

Beyond the physical effort, this BikingMan was a life lesson for many. One participant summarized their experience:

“It’s a lesson in kindness. Learn to smile—a smile costs nothing. The Sri Lankans showed me that every day. I saw incredible landscapes, but what stayed with me most was people’s kindness.”

A well-deserved break under intense heat

By midday, with temperatures soaring over 40°C, some riders still on the course took a well-deserved rest. One of them shared:

“I stopped at a local home—they gave me a place to sleep, cooked eggs, and helped me recover. I couldn’t go on, I was completely lost, but their hospitality helped me push forward.”

These pauses were essential for recharging before continuing toward the finish.

Cricket: Sri Lanka’s beloved sport

During this fifth day, participants also witnessed the Sri Lankan passion for cricket. Around kilometer 885, a parade celebrating a local victory caught Axel Carion’s attention:

“The size of this procession was incredible! Several hundred people were there, showcasing Sri Lankans’ enthusiasm for the sport.”

These unexpected moments added depth to the cyclists’ experience, reminding them that ultracycling is also a human adventure.

Unforeseen challenges: crossing a trench at kilometer 920

BikingMan Sri Lanka is an adventure full of surprises. At kilometer 920, riders encountered a massive trench dug across the road, making passage tricky. Some had to improvise stunts to cross it, while others received local help to get through.

This kind of unexpected challenge is part of the charm and difficulty of ultracycling.

The arrival of the last finisher: Wijebandara Chameera, the local hero

In the late afternoon, among the final finishers was Wijebandara Chameera, the only local rider in BikingMan Sri Lanka. Welcomed warmly by his family, he expressed his pride and joy in completing the journey:

“It was an incredibly tough experience, but I did it. I recommend everyone to try this, as it pushes you beyond your limits.”

A closing lunch to celebrate an unforgettable adventure

With the race over, participants gathered for a closing lunch. This moment allowed them to share memories of the incredible journey, recall the challenges they overcame, and celebrate the extraordinary achievement together.

Guillaume De Spoelberch, the winner of this edition, was honored once more, along with Laurianne Plaçais and Christian Auriemma, who completed the podium. The 39 ultracyclists who finished within the time limit were warmly celebrated.

Final standings of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024

BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024 left a lasting impression with its stunning landscapes, intense challenges, and the exceptional hospitality of the Sri Lankan people. Here are the top three finishers:

We’re still at Panadura, where the finish line awaits. Although the victory was claimed yesterday by Guillaume De Spoelberch, the adventure is far from over! Over 40 ultracyclists are still on the road, tackling Sri Lanka’s winding and varied routes. They have until Friday noon, local time, to cross the finish line within the 120-hour time limit.

A look back at the struggle at checkpoint 3

Let’s rewind to 306 km from the finish line at checkpoint 3 in Tissamaharama, where the first riders arrived early on the morning of day four. Here’s what some had to say:

“I got up at 3 a.m., headed down the descent… what time was it, 10, 11 p.m.? It felt endless. Honestly, psychologically, it really gets to you. Alone in the night, it’s intense,” shares Adrien Leroux.

And from Bruno Palierne: “Next time, tell us to bring a motocross! It was brutal. Really brutal. But you know what, I don’t regret a thing!”

This long descent will stay etched in their memories. Many felt the exhaustion but didn’t regret the effort they’d put in to reach that point.

A fierce battle for the Top 10

The battle for the Top 10 was a highlight of day four. Around 110 km from the finish, several riders vied for position on the narrow roads in the country’s south. Tension was high, with each rider hoping to hold or improve their standing in the general classification.

Loris Labianca remarked:

“It’s almost over, and it’s alright. Riding at night is sometimes the best option; it’s just too hot during the day, 43°C. We’ll keep going like this and see what happens.”

The grueling descent between kilometers 640 and 620

Between kilometers 640 and 620, participants faced a rough, technical descent after checkpoint 2 in Nuwara Eliya. On this dirt track, the ultracyclists had to remain incredibly focused.

Jean Jacques Raffi shares with a laugh:

“You could have mentioned we’d need mountain bikes! We’re so focused that we could count the treads on our tires. I missed a turn, there was a bump I didn’t see. Honestly, it was paradise, but it was also exhausting.”

Jean-François Piedbeouf adds:

“My back hurts, my neck hurts, my hands hurt, it’s fantastic—honestly, thank you, because it’s paradise!”

This challenging stretch offered spectacular views, and the cyclists felt a constant contradiction between the landscape’s beauty and the difficulty of the terrain.

The unforgettable experience of Sri Lanka’s elephants

The elephants, iconic to Sri Lanka’s wildlife, are an unforgettable encounter on this ultracycling route. Between Buttala and Kataragama, riders crossed through Yala National Park, an area known for frequent elephant sightings.

“I came face to face with an elephant. It started coming toward me, so I decided to stay calm. Finally, a car came by and made some noise to make it leave—otherwise, I don’t think I would have dared to move.”

This encounter left lasting memories, as one participant describes:

“I dreamed of seeing an elephant, and it happened. I was so thrilled to experience that moment!”

Axel Carion, present on-site, described this encounter as one of the highlights of BikingMan Sri Lanka.

Emotional nighttime arrivals

As night fell in Panadura, many ultracyclists reached the finish line, marking the end of an intense stage. Emotions ran high, with smiles, tears, and exhaustion blending into a sense of accomplishment.

“It’s an unimaginable feeling. I dreamed of riding these 1,000 km by bike, and I did it. The emotions were overwhelming. This is an achievement I’ll never forget, and the Sri Lankan culture is incredibly kind and caring. They always help out when elephants show up, as they know exactly where they are and what to do,” says a moved Loris Labianca.

All the riders praised the kindness and hospitality of the Sri Lankans they met along the way, always ready to lend a hand.

The physical and mental trials of BikingMan Sri Lanka

While many finally reached the finish line, some reflected on the challenges they had overcome. One participant said:

“The last 950 kilometers were tough, but it was beautiful. Every stage, every challenge, was part of this unforgettable adventure.”

This challenging course, designed by Axel Carion, lived up to BikingMan’s reputation as a true test of physical and mental endurance.

A tribute to Sri Lanka’s landscapes

All participants were awed by the variety of landscapes they passed: from lush rice fields to high-altitude tea plantations and unexpected encounters with wild elephants. One of them noted:

“At my age, I never thought I’d see so much beauty. BikingMan Sri Lanka gave me an experience I’ll never forget.”

Conclusion of day four of BikingMan Sri Lanka

That’s it for day four of BikingMan Sri Lanka! The final hours of this adventure promise to be just as intense as the remaining cyclists push to reach the finish before the 120-hour cutoff.

As always, we wrap up this recap with an update on the standings, now final for the top five. Vincent Bremond and Jérémy Rouxel have completed the Top 5.

Join us tomorrow for a full summary of day five and the conclusion of this incredible journey along the roads of BikingMan Sri Lanka!

End of day two: arrival of the chasers at Nuwara Eliya

We left the riders at Nuwara Eliya, also called “Little England,” at the end of day two. While the leaders were already well settled, the chasers arrived at checkpoint 2 in the middle of the night. They experienced intense moments on Sri Lanka’s challenging roads, marked by grueling climbs and unforgiving descents.

The cyclists describe the course as a true physical test.

“The elevation here is all or nothing. When it climbs, it’s 14-15%, and the rough asphalt makes it even tougher,” recounts participant Loris Labianca.

These conditions, combined with accumulated fatigue, forced some to alternate between micro-naps and pedaling, trying to stay focused. The elephants that inhabit certain regions add another dimension to this already demanding adventure.

Passing through Ella: a pause in a picturesque setting

After leaving Nuwara Eliya, the cyclists passed through the scenic town of Ella, renowned for its mountainous landscapes and tea plantations. This segment was carefully integrated into the course by Axel Carion, founder of BikingMan, who wanted participants to enjoy breathtaking views of landmarks like Little Adam’s Peak, rising to 1,141 meters. This part of the route also led them toward Yala Reserve, known as “Elephant Route,” where encounters with wildlife, especially elephants, were common.

Axel Carion highlighted that this segment, though beautiful, posed a considerable challenge for the riders. The scenic routes included steep slopes and difficult conditions. Some participants spent hours covering relatively short distances due to the terrain’s difficulty and the weather.

Battle for the win: Guillaume De Spoelberch takes the lead

Throughout this third day, a leading trio emerged, featuring Guillaume De Spoelberch, Laurianne Plaçais, and Italian Christian Auriemma. These three riders fought hard for the win during the night of day two into day three. As they neared the last 100 kilometers, this elite trio faced scorching conditions, with temperatures climbing over 35°C and heavy humidity.

Guillaume De Spoelberch managed to maintain his lead throughout the course despite the tough conditions.

“The sun helps, but the heat is intense. We’ve actually got 40 km more than expected, which is a psychological challenge,” says Laurianne Plaçais mid-effort.

Discovering Galle: a historic stop missed by the riders

On this third day, participants rode near the historic city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortified city is famous for its colonial architecture and rich multicultural history, having been under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. However, the riders didn’t have the chance to explore these historic gems, as the route bypassed the city center, directing them to more race-friendly roads, away from Galle’s dense traffic.

Extreme weather conditions: rain joins the race

As the leaders neared the finish line, weather conditions worsened. A violent tropical storm struck the Panadura region, making the final kilometers even more challenging. Cyclists faced torrential rain and intense lightning, adding a new level of difficulty to an already tough competition.

“I’ve never seen lightning like that—it was huge, clear, and the thunder was deafening,” says Laurianne Plaçais, who finished in second place.

Arrival of the leaders at Panadura: Guillaume De Spoelberch triumphs

Despite the challenging conditions, Guillaume De Spoelberch crossed the finish line first, winning BikingMan Sri Lanka after leading the race from start to finish.

“I can hardly believe it. I came here for fun, and now I’ve won. Winning isn’t what matters; it’s about finishing,” he confesses, visibly moved after his achievement.

This victory marks a milestone for him in a race where the main battle is against oneself.

Laurianne Plaçais and Christian Auriemma complete the podium

A few hours after Guillaume, Laurianne Plaçais crossed the finish line, securing second place. She demonstrated remarkable determination despite tough weather conditions and technical issues.

“I didn’t feel like I was in a race; it felt more like a beautiful journey, almost surreal,” she says at her arrival.

In third place, Christian Auriemma also delivered an impressive performance. The Italian made his mark on this edition with his tenacity and his memorable encounter with an elephant during the night.

“I got very close to an elephant, and it tried to charge me,” he recounts.

The chasers and the race against time

With the podium decided, the race continues for the remaining participants, some of whom are racing against the 120-hour time limit to reach the finish. This race against time tests their endurance and resilience, with several kilometers still ahead and unpredictable weather looming.

Provisional race summary

The third day of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024 wraps up with a podium featuring Guillaume De Spoelberch, Laurianne Plaçais, and Christian Auriemma. But for the other cyclists, the adventure continues, and the battle to finish within the time limit rages on. The provisional standings show widening gaps as the remaining riders face the final challenges before crossing the finish line.

End of Day 1 recap: Late night arrival at checkpoint 1

We last left the participants at the end of Day 1 at Checkpoint 1 in Sigiriya, where the leaders were among the first to arrive. Many faced tough conditions, particularly the sweltering heat that defined the beginning of the race. Laurianne Plaçais shares:

“I was close to overheating at the start; I started feeling chills and goosebumps. Then, I bought a bottle of water, poured it over my head and neck, and I felt better.”

Despite these challenges, the leaders pushed forward, adjusting to the cooler night temperatures.

The chasers also reached Sigiriya later that night, encountering a few surprises. In addition to the intense heat, they had to deal with aggressive stray dogs.

“The dogs in the last stretch were really something, they’re everywhere, every 50 meters, so you have to sprint because they chase you,” one cyclist exclaimed.

Others shared unexpected encounters with local wildlife, including a participant who came face-to-face with an elephant just five meters away, making this first night unforgettable.

The climb to Riverstone: challenges amidst spectacular scenery

With sunrise, the leaders embarked on the climb toward Riverstone, a renowned location for its stunning landscapes and hiking trails. For the ultracyclists, however, this majestic mountain park proved to be an intense ordeal. Axel Carion, the founder of BikingMan races, joined them on this stretch and emphasized the climb’s difficulty.

“I’m currently in one of the major challenges of this BikingMan Sri Lanka, the Riverstone climb in the country’s central mountain range. This pass will really test the participants,” he explained.

This particularly tough ascent tested the riders’ endurance. One cyclist shared the challenge of staying motivated in such conditions:

“It took me three hours to cover 10 km. I thought I might see other people, but I prayed they wouldn’t catch up to me. I told myself if I got overtaken by anyone, I’d dig a hole and hide in it.”

Despite the heat, exhaustion, and physical pain, the participants pushed on through this demanding terrain.

Gravel roads and steep slopes: a taste of what’s to come

The conditions of the route added further challenges for the cyclists. Beyond the steep incline, the gravel road required both technical skill and physical endurance, turning every kilometer into a true test of resilience.

“The surface is all gravel, with potholes everywhere,” described one participant.

These conditions required mastery and physical resilience, turning every kilometer into a formidable test.

Arrival in Kandy: a historic pause before continuing onward

The riders then moved toward Kandy, an iconic Sri Lankan destination around the 460-km mark. Kandy holds historical, political, and cultural significance, having been the last capital of the Sinhalese kingdom before British colonization. It is also home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses a revered Buddha’s tooth, making it a sacred place for Sri Lankans.

For the ultracyclists, however, Kandy was just another milestone on their path to Checkpoint 2 in Nuwara Eliya, situated 545 km from the start. A brief stop allowed them to appreciate the city’s beauty while remaining focused on their ultimate goal.

The battle for the lead: Guillaume De Spoelberch takes charge

During this second day, three ultracyclists have clearly broken away from the pack. Leading the charge is Guillaume De Spoelberch, setting a consistent pace. Close behind, reigning champion Laurianne Plaçais and Italian Christian Oriema are doing their best to stay in the race. The Italian, who made an impressive comeback overnight, recounted his encounter with an elephant:

“I heard a noise to my left and didn’t realize it was an elephant. It tried to charge at me, but I managed to avoid it.”

Despite these challenges, the leading trio managed to reach Checkpoint 2 in Nuwara Eliya. This town, perched at over 1,800 meters in altitude, offered a welcome break for the riders after two exhausting days of racing.

“I think I’ll lie down for an hour or two before heading back out, especially since these are the hottest hours of the day,” shared Guillaume De Spoelberch, visibly drained from climbing Sri Lanka’s longest pass, an 18-km ascent at an 8% incline.

Technical difficulties fail to deter the leaders’ determination

Not everything was smooth for the leaders, though. Laurianne Plaçais encountered a technical issue with her derailleur.

“My cable snapped, and I lost over an hour trying to fix it,” she shared.

Despite this setback, she reached Checkpoint 2, maintaining her place among the leading trio.

Checkpoint 2 at Nuwara Eliya: a brief rest before moving forward

After the grueling climb, the cyclists took a well-deserved short break.

“I had to stop in the pass; I was feeling so bad,” said Laurianne Plaçais, describing the intensity of her effort.

Nuwara Eliya, with its cooler climate, offered a temporary respite, allowing the ultracyclists to recharge before embarking on the next leg of their adventure.

Onward to checkpoint 3 in Tissamaharama

The next stage of the race will take the participants to Checkpoint 3 in Tissamaharama, located at the 732-km mark. The competition is expected to intensify between the top three leaders, who will traverse the southern part of the island near the coast before heading northward toward the finish.

Day 2 provisional standings

At the top of the leaderboard, Guillaume De Spoelberch maintains his lead, followed by Laurianne Plaçais and Christian Auriema. The battle remains fierce, with every kilometer covered in the heat, steep slopes, and gravel roads playing a crucial role.

The Start and Mandatory Check-in: Essential Preparation

The official start of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024 was given this Sunday at noon, local time. But before that, participants had to complete a mandatory equipment check-in. This gear inspection is crucial to ensure the ultracyclists’ safety throughout the race. The organizers enforce a strict equipment list to ensure adequate water supplies, bike repair tools, and clothing suitable for the potentially extreme conditions of the course.

This phase offered a glimpse into the favorites’ mindset before the race began. For some participants, this competition is a whole new challenge.

“This unsupported format is very different because you have to take care of everything on your own,” explained one participant.

Others, more experienced, seemed confident and ready for this new challenge.

Atmosphere Before the Start: Excitement and Anticipation

Among the 50 registered participants, many are BikingMan veterans, while for others, this is their first experience in the World Championship of ultra-cycling. The atmosphere was a mix of excitement and apprehension.

“My goal is to have fun, to enjoy every moment,” said Guillaume De Spoelberch, a regular at BikingMan events.

Others were motivated by the challenge of completing their first BikingMan:

“I want to enjoy every moment and finish in good shape.”

Beginner cyclists also shared their concerns. After spending 15 days in Sri Lanka, one was wary of encounters with local wildlife, while another was mentally preparing for potential mechanical issues, a reminder that unpredictability is part of ultra-cycling.

The Official Start: Heading Towards Sigiriya

At precisely noon, the participants set off from Negombo, north of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital. Their first destination: Sigiriya, Checkpoint 1, located 298 km from the start. The first 35 kilometers of the race were neutralized by Sri Lankan military for extra safety due to the dense traffic on Sunday, a day of rest for locals. This stretch allowed the riders to take in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s coast, skirting the Laccadive Sea before moving inland from Chilaw.

Scorching Heat and Unexpected Challenges: An Intense First Day

By the 100-km mark, a small lead group began to pull ahead. The heat became increasingly oppressive, with temperatures reaching 35°C and a heat index soaring to 42°C by mid-afternoon. Participants faced a true thermal challenge, with the humidity making it even harder.

“It’s so hot it’s getting intense,” one participant shared. “I sped up a bit to create more wind to cool down, but it’s tough.”

Meanwhile, another group of cyclists decided on a more moderate pace.

“No point keeping up with the leaders in this oppressive heat,” said one of them.

Riders took regular breaks to refuel and hydrate, a vital necessity to prevent dehydration in these extreme conditions.

“I’m already on my second bottle of water, and I don’t feel any difference—the heat is crushing,” recounted one participant during a refreshment stop.

The First Challenges: Paved Roads and Dirt Tracks

The initial part of the race, between Negombo and Sigiriya, alternated between paved roads and dirt tracks, terrains that challenged the cyclists. Axel Carion, the founder of BikingMan races, had previously scouted the course and described these stretches as “Gravel segments” nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka.

“Replenishing and staying hydrated is essential, especially with this blistering heat over 40 degrees,” he explained.

The presence of water reservoirs along the route provided some relief for the cyclists, though the conditions added an extra layer of difficulty to this already grueling first day.

“Sri Lanka’s dirt roads are full of challenges, and the heat makes every effort even more exhausting,” summarized Axel Carion.

Approaching Nightfall: A Nocturnal Battle Ahead

As the sun set over Sri Lanka, the cyclists continued toward Sigiriya, the first checkpoint. Nightfall heralded a new challenge for the leaders, who now faced a true battle to maintain their lead.

“The heat is stifling, but hopefully, nightfall will bring some relief,” one participant hoped.

Day 1 Standings: Favorites Lead the Pack

At the end of the first day, gaps were already forming between participants. At the front of the pack were favorites Laurianne Plaçais, the reigning BikingMan champion, accompanied by Guillaume De Spoelberch, who dominated the day by staying ahead throughout. The chasers will have to work hard to catch up over the coming days.

A Challenging Yet Rewarding First Day

This first day of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024 proved a formidable challenge for participants. The crushing heat, Gravel segments, and winding roads tested the cyclists’ physical and mental endurance. Yet, their enthusiasm and determination remain unshaken.

“It’s a challenge, but this is exactly what I came here for,” shared one rider at the end of the day.

The Next Stage of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024

The first leg of BikingMan Sri Lanka helped participants adjust to the island’s extreme conditions. The race promises more twists and turns, especially with the next day expected to be just as grueling. Join us tomorrow for the recap of Day 2 of BikingMan Sri Lanka 2024, and follow along as the cyclists push onward in this exceptional endurance race.
