A 5th Day Filled with Emotion and Self-Transcendence

The BikingMan Aura 2024 officially came to an end on the 5th day of the race, marking the conclusion of a demanding and unforgettable challenge for the ultracyclists who covered the 1,000 km across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Out of the 200 participants at the start, 168 managed to cross the finish line, offering powerful testimonies about their experience. Today, we’ll look back on the highlights of this final race day, with a focus on the “lanternes rouges,” those riders who fully embraced the adventure.

The Lanternes Rouges: Stories of Perseverance and Courage

The lanternes rouges, the last to cross the finish line, often have the most inspiring stories. One participant, Bruno Pallierne, who was competing in his 11th BikingMan, shared his story:

“I started participating in 2020, just after Covid, with the BikingMan Portugal. I saw a documentary on Gérard in Oman that inspired me, and that’s when the adventure began for me. Every race is a moment of life, sharing, and emotion, and I have no regrets!”

For others, this adventure took on a completely different meaning, like this duo who decided to put the stopwatch aside to focus on the human experience:

“It was a different way to do the BikingMan, without pressure. We shared incredible human moments, stories, beautiful life moments, and stunning landscapes. This is my new vision of BikingMan, and I think that’s how I want to do them in the future.”

These accounts illustrate that the essence of BikingMan is not just about crossing the finish line first, but about living a unique experience, rich in discoveries and encounters.

Women Surpassing Themselves: The Voice of Female Cyclists

The BikingMan Aura was also marked by the determination of its female participants. One of them expressed her pride in finishing the race:

“It was hard, but I’m proud of myself. I trusted myself, and in the end, you always make it. I encourage all women to go for it, because we are capable of anything.”

This race demonstrated that women are just as capable of taking on the challenges of ultracycling, and their growing presence is a powerful message of inspiration for all those considering this kind of adventure.

The Essential Contribution of the Race Angels

A key element in the success of this BikingMan Aura 2024 was the role played by the Race Angels, those dedicated volunteers who watch over the riders throughout the race. Morgane, one of the Race Angels, shared her experience:

“Being a Race Angel is seeing the race from the inside. You witness moments when the riders are sometimes at their lowest, sometimes euphoric. It’s a privilege to form strong bonds with people who, four days ago, were complete strangers. For me, BikingMan Auvergne Rhône-Alpes is like a family reunion—I come back every year, I see the same team: it’s a family gathering!”

Morgane compared the event to a true family reunion, returning each year with the same team, reinforcing the sense of community and camaraderie that characterizes BikingMan.

The Final Challenge: The Col de la Machine and the Gorges de la Bourne

As the last participants attempted to overcome the race’s final obstacles, the Col de la Machine and the Gorges de la Bourne, their testimonies reflected the mix of challenge and satisfaction that comes with this kind of event. One participant summed up the experience with a joke:

“This race is tough! That last part with the Col de la Machine, 50 km before the finish… But it was amazing, even if it was hard.”

Another, with a smile marked by fatigue, commented on how the course had affected his appearance:

“Look at this, that’s the sign of a good ultra race! (tan line) I’m not sure if it’ll come off in the shower, but I can’t promise the water will stay clear.”

The passage through the Gorges de la Bourne was one of the most impressive moments of the course. The beauty of the cliffs and the landscapes provided a final visual reward for these heroes of ultracycling, leading them to the finish line in Villard-de-Lans.

The Closing Ceremony: A Moment of Sharing and Celebration

The closing evening brought together all the finishers, whether they completed the race or not. The images from this convivial moment showed tired but smiling faces, happy to have shared this adventure. Axel, the main organizer, delivered an emotional speech:

“Thank you for taking this time together. I hope we can continue to meet, to build this community, and to share these moments of communion.”

This gathering underscored the true spirit of BikingMan: an endurance event, certainly, but above all, an occasion for sharing, solidarity, and self-discovery.

The Final Finishers: The Satisfaction of Crossing the Finish Line

Early on the 5th day, the last finishers, the lanternes rouges, crossed the finish line under the 120-hour mark. Valérie, David, and Isabelle shared their feelings, visibly moved by this accomplishment. Isabelle, with tears in her eyes, said:

“I’m proud, but I’m not alone. There’s my family, my friends, and years of training behind me. My father put me on a bike when I was little; he’s no longer here today, but I know he was with me throughout the journey.”

This poignant testimony sums up the emotional intensity of a challenge like BikingMan and the impact it can have on the lives of its participants.

A Challenge Overcome and a Strengthened Community

In the end, this BikingMan Aura 2024 was much more than a simple ultracycling race. It was a human adventure, marked by moments of doubt, pain, but above all, joy, solidarity, and self-transcendence. As the race comes to an end, the spirit of BikingMan lives on in the heart of every participant.

Next weekend, the baton will be passed to the “555 du Vercors,” a 500 km raid with 12,000 meters of positive elevation, also starting from Villard-de-Lans. After a well-deserved break, the championship will resume in September in Brazil, before concluding with the mysterious BikingMan X in Morocco.

Thank you to everyone who followed this edition of the BikingMan Aura. Whether you were participants, Race Angels, or spectators, you all contributed to making this adventure unforgettable. See you soon for new ultracycling adventures!

Estelle Gerbier: The First Woman to Cross the Finish Line

One of the most memorable moments of the day was the arrival of Estelle Gerbier, the first woman to cross the finish line in this edition of the BikingMan Aura. She ranked 11th overall, a remarkable achievement completed in less than 57 hours. Estelle’s arrival on the red carpet in Villard-de-Lans was greeted with applause, celebrating her victory in the women’s category.

Estelle shared her impressions after finishing the race:

“I chose this race to ride in this beautiful region, but unfortunately, we didn’t have much luck with the weather. Despite that, it remains an incredible adventure.”

Her achievement highlights the strength and perseverance of female participants in this type of competition, proving that ultracycling is not just a male challenge.

Checkpoint 3 in Saint-Agrève: The Last Hurdle Before the Finish

While Estelle was savoring her victory, the atmosphere was quite different at checkpoint 3 in Saint-Agrève, located at kilometer 810 of the route. Here, the ultracyclists still in the race were facing a true mental and physical challenge. Despite exhaustion, they continued to push forward toward the finish line.

One of them, searching for motivation, expressed his mindset:

“Coffee is what keeps me standing. Every 90 km, I tell myself I just need to get through the next segment… just 180 km more to go.”

This checkpoint marked the last stop before the final push toward Villard-de-Lans. For many, this moment was crucial, symbolizing the approach of the finish line after hundreds of kilometers battling fatigue, the weather, and the course’s obstacles.

The Finishers’ Waltz: Many Cyclists Cross the Finish Line

In the early morning, a series of finishers arrived in Villard-de-Lans, sharing testimonies filled with emotion and satisfaction. Several of them expressed pride in having taken on this titanic challenge, emphasizing the importance of support and solidarity that accompanied them throughout the race.

One of them, Dimitri Martin, confided:

“I set myself a goal of 4 days, and in the end, I managed to finish in 3. But I know I couldn’t have done it alone. It’s the energy of other participants, the kindness, and constant support that helped me make it to the end.”

An 18-year-old finisher, participating in a BikingMan for the first time, shared his enthusiasm for the future and the beauty of the experience:

“It was long, it was hard, I’m sore all over, but the landscapes were breathtaking. It made me forget all the pain. It was an incredible experience. This is my first BikingMan, but I hope it won’t be the last. I’m really looking forward to participating in other races.”

Philippe: An Example of Resilience at 70 Years Old

Among the finishers, Philippe Geffroy, a 70-year-old cyclist, gave an especially inspiring account. Having already completed several BikingMan races, he finished this edition in under 70 hours, far surpassing his expectations:

“I told myself that at 70, finishing a BikingMan in under 70 hours would be amazing. I had set a goal of 85 to 90 hours. I went through painful moments, but the landscapes, the wild beauty of the region gave me the strength to keep going.”

Philippe also emphasized the importance of turning pain into positive energy, a motivational message for all participants:

“It’s progress through pain, but once you manage to turn it into happiness, you discover something greater within yourself!”

The Battle of the Lanternes Rouges: A Seemingly Endless Challenge

While the first finishers arrived in Villard-de-Lans, the lanternes rouges—the nickname for the last competitors—continued to struggle on the roads. At kilometer 640, these ultracyclists were battling exhaustion, steep climbs, and the cold of the night. Their goal? To reach checkpoint 3 before setting off on the final stage.

One of them expressed a feeling of extreme fatigue:

“The fatigue is really starting to weigh on me. I tried taking a few one-hour naps, but I’ll probably have to stop earlier tonight.”

Another, visibly exhausted, shared his experience:

“I’ve been pushing through for 600 km. I stopped on a bench like a hobo to sleep, and now I’m back at it. Just gotta keep going a little longer.”

The Last Major Challenge: The Cirque de Combe Laval and the Col de la Machine

The Cirque de Combe Laval and the Col de la Machine represented the ultimate challenge for the ultracyclists still in the race. After 950 km, climbing this 12-km pass with an elevation gain of 775 meters and an average grade of 6.3% proved to be an ordeal for their tired legs.

One participant described this final challenge:

“It’s beautiful, but it hurts. I can’t wait to get to the top, just for the view.”

The Final Stretch and the Approach to the End of the Race

By the end of this 4th day, 78 participants had crossed the finish line, savoring the relief and joy of overcoming one of the most demanding challenges of their lives. There were still 92 ultracyclists on the course, racing against time to finish the event before the deadline set for Friday, July 26, at 12 PM.

Tomorrow will mark the end of this extraordinary adventure. Thank you for following this 4th summary of the race. Stay tuned for the final episode of this epic BikingMan Aura 2024, where we’ll recount the last moments of this exceptional race.

Checkpoint 3: Fatigue Takes its Toll on the Leaders

In the early morning, the first participants reached checkpoint 3 in Saint-Agrève, located at kilometer 810. It was an opportunity to hear their impressions after covering more than 800 km. Their faces showed signs of palpable fatigue, but also unwavering determination.

One of the riders, Titouan Reydet, described his journey through the Pas de Peyrol:

“Pas de Peyrol, very foggy, we couldn’t see anything. Then Auvergne, super rugged, we didn’t cross paths with many people; it was really nice. On the other hand, no cars, just fields as far as the eye could see.”

As for the next part of their journey? A well-deserved rest:

“I’m going to sleep a bit, it’ll do me good, then I’ll set off again toward the finish line.”

Grégory Cassini, who was physically in 3rd position at checkpoint 3 but ranked 4th due to staggered start times, shared his thoughts on the competition with Laurent Boursette:

“We ended up together after the Pas de Peyrol, and it was a bit of a mano a mano between second and third. It was nice, very beautiful landscapes, especially at the Pas de Peyrol, really splendid!”

The Climb of the Pas de Peyrol: A Challenge Under a Clear Sky

The sun finally rose over Saint-Agrève, and the weather improved significantly. It was the perfect time to reflect and focus on the ascent of the Pas de Peyrol, at kilometer 500. After hundreds of kilometers, the riders still had to climb this legendary pass, a true rite of passage for ultracyclists.

Several riders shared their experience of this intense moment:

“It was siesta time… I hope it was restorative. Waking up and seeing this panorama, it’s incredible.”

Others, like Julien Leroy, felt the ascent as a true test:

“This climb… you really feel it. It’s beautiful, but it’s tough. It’s well deserved, but worth it.”

A Must-See: Combe Laval, the Jewel of the Route

The Combe Laval, an iconic road in the Vercors, became a key point on the course. A spectacular geological site, it offered breathtaking views to the riders. The sun was finally shining, and this stretch was a true visual feast, providing a well-earned reward to the participants who had already given so much.

The Podium in Villard-de-Lans: Titouan Reydet Triumphs in 48 Hours

The top three riders finally crossed the finish line in Villard-de-Lans, with Titouan Reydet winning this edition in less than 48 hours. Emotions ran high as the three leading competitors received a warm round of applause.

Titouan Reydet shared his joy after this exceptional performance:

“It was mental, it was physical, but it was great; it’s everything. It’s cool to be here, and 1000 km in less than 48 hours, that’s a nice barrier to break.”

He also explained how he managed his sleep:

“I didn’t sleep until the afternoon of the second day. I took a 15-minute nap in the afternoon, 20 minutes at 1 AM, and 35 minutes total. It was intense.”

Laurent Boursette, who arrived shortly after, expressed his satisfaction at completing this challenge in 48 hours:

“It’s a magnificent course. Even with the rain, it wasn’t very cold, and it was worth taking in the scenery.”

The Lanternes Rouges Continue the Adventure

While the top three celebrated their victory, many ultracyclists were still on the road, struggling to reach Villard-de-Lans. Many were still at checkpoint 2 in Saint-Flour or in the middle of the Pas de Peyrol climb. The sun and better weather conditions on this day allowed them to enjoy this challenging part of the route.

Here is the provisional ranking:

Titouan Reydet: 46h 22m

Grégory Cassini: 47h 41m

Dorian Galmiche: 48h 10m

Laurent Boursette: 48h 23m

Pieter Aarnoutse: 50h 28m

A Race That Continues to Push Limits

The third day of BikingMan Aura 2024 was filled with emotions and challenges for all participants. While the podium has been established, the race is far from over for the other competitors, who continue to battle the course, the elements, and themselves.

The red carpet at the finish line will continue to welcome riders all night and into tomorrow, to greet the many finishers. Don’t forget to follow their progress on social media and the live tracking platform by Oaka. Thank you for following along, and see you tomorrow for another recap of this epic event.

The second day of the BikingMan Aura 2024 took place under cloudy skies and difficult weather conditions. The rain, already present the day before, continued to accompany the riders, adding a further difficulty to this 1,000 km challenge. The leading group, made up of Théo Thaon, Laurent Boursette and Grégory Cassini, had already covered almost 450 km, engaging in a real night-time battle.

The battle for the lead: Théo Thaon takes the lead

The leading trio made it through the night with flying colors, and it was Théo Thaon who took first place, closely followed by event favorite Laurent Boursette and Grégory Cassini, who had already shone at the BikingMan Corsica. These three leaders set an impressive pace and showed their determination to win this event.

Titouan Reydet shared his impressions of a tough night:

“Yeah, you land in the middle of the night and think, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ It was folksy, but no equipment or physical problems, so it’s fine. I even got chased by a badger!”

Despite the difficulties encountered, morale remained high among the front runners. They continued on towards the mythical Pas de Peyrol, a legendary Tour de France pass.

Progress towards Saint-Flour and managing fatigue

After crossing the 500 km mark, the participants reached checkpoint 2 in Saint-Flour. Laurent Boursette, who had taken the lead the day before, admitted that it had been a difficult night:

“It was a hard night because it rained a lot. It’s complicated to enjoy yourself when you’re soaking wet all night long. I’m probably going to sleep for an hour in Saint-Flour, just to get rid of the feeling of sleep.”

The riders must now tackle one of the toughest sections of the course: the Pas de Peyrol, which represents a major challenge even for the most experienced ultracyclists.

The chasers face the Col de la Chavade and the Col du Pendu

As the race leaders made their way towards the Pas de Peyrol, the chasing pack, located around kilometer 300, had to tackle the climbs of the Col de la Chavade and the Col du Pendu. These passes proved to be endurance tests, not least because of the weather conditions.

One of the participants encountered technical problems with his navigation equipment:

“I have two GPS units, but neither works any more. Luckily I had a backup GPS, but now nothing works.”

Despite the setbacks, the cyclists’ spirit of perseverance remains intact, and they keep going, hoping that the weather conditions will improve.

Checkpoint 1 closed and first abandonments

In the middle of the day, checkpoint 1 in Saint-Agrève officially closed its doors. Of the 200 participants, 192 made it through this first checkpoint, but some were forced to abandon due to fatigue, physical problems or difficult weather conditions. Among them, Mickael was unfortunately forced to stop. Isabelle, his team-mate, decided to continue the adventure solo.

Isabelle and Mickael’s arrival at checkpoint 1 was marked by strong emotions:

“I stopped at the bottom, near the stream, and I imagined doing these three bumps this morning to get here quietly, but they were really difficult. I made it to the end, but Mickael couldn’t go on,” shared Isabelle.

Mickael, for his part, explained his decision to give up:

“I came to test myself, but by then I’d reached my physical limits. With more time, it could have been managed, but with the race deadlines, it’s too difficult.”

A surprise retirement and the consequences for the race

One of the most striking retirements of this second day was that of Guillaume de Spoelberch, one of the contenders for the BikingMan series title. Confronted with trying race conditions, he preferred to drop out to preserve his strength for the next stage in Morocco:

“I’d rather recover and come back stronger for the Morocco stage than wear myself out here.”

The withdrawal was a real Trafalgar blow for the favourites, but it serves as a reminder of just how unforgiving this race is, particularly in the face of extreme weather conditions.

Climbing the Pas de Peyrol: a legendary challenge

The day ended with the ascent of the Pas de Peyrol, an emblematic pass culminating at 1,589 m altitude. This mythical spot, the scene of numerous battles during the Tour de France, has also been a must for the BikingMan Aura for the past four years. Despite fatigue and accumulated mileage, more than a dozen ultracyclists managed to reach the summit, and another thirty or so were still in the midst of their ascent.

Weather conditions improved as the day progressed, giving the cyclists a little respite to enjoy this unique moment:

“The scenery here is really magnificent, and the sun is finally starting to come out. It’s a little comfort after all the rain,” said Axel Carion.

An event that tests mental strength and determination

This second day of the BikingMan Aura 2024 was once again marked by difficult weather conditions, withdrawals and major challenges. Yet the participants continue to push their limits, guided by their passion and determination. The battle for the race lead intensifies, and runners continue their quest, despite fatigue and obstacles.

Stay tuned for the rest of this adventure, and follow the athletes’ progress in real time on social networks and Oaka’s live tracking platform. See you tomorrow for a summary of the third day of the race, which promises even more twists and challenges in this extreme e

In the moments before the start, participants shared their hopes and concerns. One rider expressed:

“I’m a bit nervous, but it’ll be fine. The sheer distance and effort required worry me, but I’m confident. The main thing is to make it to the end, even if I’m last, and hear that final race bell ring!”

Another competitor, Laurent Boursette, a veteran of several BikingMan races, shared his enthusiasm:

“The goal is to have fun. We’re going to enjoy the route, savor the BikingMan vibe, which looks amazing, especially through my home region, Auvergne.”

The First Few Rainy Kilometers

In the early morning, following a resounding countdown, the riders set off under threatening skies. Soon enough, rain began pouring, accompanying them throughout the day. Within the first 50 kilometers, the weather had already started causing trouble for the ultracyclists.

Simon Vernoux, one of the competitors, was the first to experience a major mechanical issue:

“My Di2 isn’t working right. I can’t shift gears at the back on uphill climbs. I feel like I’ll have to give up; I don’t want to ride 900 km fixed-gear style.”

Unfortunately for him, Simon couldn’t fix his malfunction and was forced to withdraw within the early kilometers—a crushing blow after months of preparation.

The Col de la Bataille Climb: The First Major Challenge

Despite the relentless rain, the cyclists pressed on, tackling increasingly demanding climbs. By early afternoon, at the 72-km mark, they reached the summit of Col de la Bataille, standing at 1,313 meters, one of the race’s initial big obstacles. With temperatures around 52°F (11°C) and rain, this ascent proved even more punishing.

While the tough conditions added a striking touch to the race, the foggy landscapes imbued the course with a mysterious allure. As one rider remarked:

“The view here is incredible, even with the rain. It adds an almost mystical feel to the pass.”

Breaking the 100-km Barrier: Battling the Cold

After conquering the Col de la Bataille, cyclists set their sights on the psychological “100-km barrier.” The rain and cold were starting to wear down their bodies, but their determination remained strong. Some found ways to keep their spirits high, as one rider jokingly sang:

“Where’s happiness, where is it? It’s here. Thanks to a good pizza! Alright, gotta keep going, gotta push forward!”

Pit stops were essential for recharging, with many riders pausing to warm up with hot drinks before continuing.

The Col de la Mure: A Last Climb Before Nightfall

By late afternoon, the participants reached Col de la Mure at 747 meters, after 160 km of racing. Although this climb was relatively accessible, signs of fatigue began to emerge, with heavy legs slowing some cyclists. Fortunately, the rain finally ceased, providing a brief reprieve. As the clouds lifted, the sunset bathed the scenic views, reinvigorating the ultracyclists as they pushed on toward the first checkpoint.

Arriving at Checkpoint 1: Laurent Boursette in the Lead

After 8 hours and 24 minutes of racing, Laurent Boursette became the first to reach checkpoint 1 at Saint-Agrève, having completed the day’s 214 km stage. Right behind him, other competitors began to arrive one by one, exchanging impressions and gearing up for the night ahead.

Drenched but pleased with his performance, Laurent shared his plan for the rest of the night:

“I’m a bit wet, but I changed clothes. I’ll keep riding, not planning to stop tonight. I’ll try to make it to checkpoint 2 with minimal breaks.”

Titouan Reydet, another participant, commented on the difficulties he faced:

“The rain was tough enough, but the Ardèche region is even harder with gradients up to 15%. You really earn that first checkpoint, but I’m happy to have made it and ready for the night!”

Guillaume De Spoelberch, a Belgian rider, taking advantage of his country’s national holiday, humorously noted:

“Today’s July 21, Belgium’s national day, and we got real Belgian weather here at BikingMan Aura! And I’m happy—even if I’m not totally dry, I’m alive!”

The Night Battle Begins

Most cyclists decided to continue after a brief refueling at checkpoint 1, setting off into the first nighttime leg of the BikingMan Aura 2024. Their target: checkpoint 2, located at Saint-Flour, 511 km into the race.

The provisional leaderboard:

Titouan Reydet – 267 km

Laurent Boursette – +5 km

Sébastien Pailly – +6 km

Pieter Aarnoutse – +7 km

Gregory Cassini – +12 km

Night arrivals: Josiane and Ramona, an adventure shared between friends

In the early hours of Friday morning, at 1:30 a.m., friends Josiane and Ramona crossed the finish line together. The two friends, who shared the journey from start to finish, expressed their relief and pride. The pain and challenges are now behind them, replaced by the satisfaction of completing this challenge.

“It was tough, but we did it. I even managed to stay quiet sometimes, even though I talk a lot, a lot!” they summed up with radiant smiles.

First woman solo: Émilie Clisson’s impressive performance

At 5:16 a.m., Émilie Clisson became the first solo woman to complete the event, finishing after 95 hours and 42 minutes of racing. Tired but satisfied, Émilie admitted she was already feeling the physical toll of the effort.

“My feet hurt, my legs, my back, my wrists… but it was worth it,” she shared with a laugh.

Her goal was to finish in under 90 hours, and while she didn’t quite meet that target, she was proud of maintaining an impressive daily average of 250 km.

The final hours: friends sharing the joy of finishing

Around midday, Olivier, Thibault, Melen, and Geoffroy reached the Col de la Bataille, about 40 kilometers from the finish. Emotions ran high for them.

“I cried three times; it was so beautiful,” Olivier recounted, overwhelmed by the joy of sharing this adventure with his friends.

Together, they covered the final kilometers, savoring every moment in a spirit of camaraderie.

Behind them, Aurélie and Nicolas were also completing the last climbs, filled with gratitude and a sense of personal accomplishment.

“It’s the first day my legs are cooperating,” joked Aurélie, delighted to feel the pain ease as they neared the end.

Reflections on an adventure beyond time

For the group of friends who arrived together in Beaumont-lès-Valence, it was a moment of shared emotion.

“Today, I cried three times,” one of them shared.

The beauty of the Vercors landscapes and the satisfaction of overcoming the challenges left lasting impressions.

“It’s a physical pain, but also a bubble. Mentally, you’re not thinking about anything else; you’re just in the moment,” he explained.

This adventure, far beyond a simple physical challenge, allows participants to reconnect with themselves.

“What really stands out is that you think about the important things: family, friends, memories that matter,” added another.

Over these days of racing, the participants have experienced a true inner journey, far removed from daily distractions.

The final stretch: the countdown begins

At 5 p.m., Aurélie and Nicolas finally crossed the finish line, met by applause from friends and support staff. For them, the moment was intense after overcoming injuries and exhaustion.

“I was hurt the whole time, but the joy of finishing is indescribable,” Nicolas shared. They savored every second of this long-awaited moment.

As the closing evening celebration got underway, the last participants continued crossing the finish line. Only about ten cyclists remained on the course, striving to finish within the time limit.

“It’s coming home,” said one rider, happy to finally be back in Beaumont-lès-Valence.

The shock of returning to reality

During the closing ceremony, organizers addressed the participants, congratulating them and preparing them for what lay ahead after such an intense experience.

“Often, returning to reality is tough. It’s normal to feel a shock after an event like this,” explained Axel Carion.

“On Monday, in the shower, you’ll think back on this community, on what you shared together!” he reminded them.

Many admitted it would take time to fully process the experience.

The final arrival: a symbol of perseverance

At 1:24 a.m., in the early hours of Saturday, Thomas Bruno, the “lantern rouge” of this edition, finally crossed the finish line after 116 hours and 24 minutes of racing. Finishing 93rd and last, Thomas expressed his pride in accomplishing this monumental challenge.

A memorable edition

The fourth leg of the BikingMan Ultra-Distance World Championship ends on a festive note. The Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region offered the 117 participants a journey beyond time, where everyone pushed their limits and discovered new personal strengths. Of the 117 riders who started, 93 finished within the time limit, making this edition a resounding success.

The Col du Grand Colombier: a feared ascent

As some riders neared the end, the Grand Colombier loomed as a daunting barrier, both admired and feared. Its steep inclines, notorious for their high gradients, continued to test cyclists, even on foot.

“We had a good hike up there,” one participant joked.

“Even on foot, it gets the heart racing,” added Pierre Colliot, visibly exhausted but still determined.

Indeed, some resorted to walking the climb in “flip-flops,” an unconventional but effective strategy for finishing the ascent.

After conquering the 16 km climb, reaching the top of the Grand Colombier was celebrated as a true blessing.

“Half of it was in sandals, but it works,” joked Clément Cavaroc, a participant thrilled to complete the legendary ascent.

All that remained was to pedal toward Valence, a now attainable goal for the bravest.

Unexpected refreshments along the route

For many, progress through the Vercors came with memorable encounters. At kilometer 830, after crossing the Col du Granier, some cyclists stumbled upon an improvised refreshment stand set up by a fan, a tradition repeated for the third year in a row.

“A gift from the heavens,” commented Josiane, relieved to take a break and refuel before continuing her journey.

Meanwhile, others pressed on through the beautiful landscapes of the Vercors, despite growing pain and fatigue.

“We must be a bit masochistic,” another cyclist joked, referring to the final climbs of the course.

The Cirque de Combe Laval: a final gift from the Vercors

The Cirque de Combe Laval, one of the Vercors’ natural wonders, provided BikingMan Aura’s participants with a final scenic gift before the last stretch. This road, carved along the cliffside, offered breathtaking views of the region – a treat for the eyes but not for the legs.

“My backside hurts, tendinitis starting, but I’ll make it to the end,” shared a cyclist, visibly exhausted but highly determined.

Riding through the Cirque was an unforgettable experience, made possible by the workers who, over a century ago in 1896, built this route to transport timber. Today, it’s taken on by cyclists who see it as both a challenge and a source of inspiration.

Col de la Bataille: the final stretch

For many cyclists, the Col de la Bataille marked one of the last obstacles before reaching their goal. Despite the fatigue, some were already thinking of celebrations.

“We’ll be a bit late, but we hope everyone saved some snacks for us,” joked a rider approaching the summit.

This climb, followed by the Col de Limouche, represented the final ascents before the descent to Beaumont-lès-Valence.

At 8 p.m., after several days of nonstop effort, Adrien Leroux and his companions finally crossed the finish line.

“This was my first BikingMan, and I’d never done more than 200 km before. Here, you tackle insane stuff – even the Tour de France doesn’t do this!” he said, still overcome with emotion.

Emotional arrivals and personal reflections

For many, BikingMan Aura is a genuine inner journey.

“It’s a personal voyage; you learn to understand your body, how it adapts to different stresses,” explained one participant.

Self-transcendence was a common theme among cyclists.

“Through others, you start to realize what you’ve just done. It’s quite something,” he added.

This kind of event oscillates between suffering and moments of joy.

“There are times when you suffer a lot, when you think of giving up, and others when you’re truly happy,” summarized Joan-Carles Leon, another participant.

It’s this duality that makes the race so special for those with the courage to participate.

The race continues for the last participants

While some savor their finish, others are still on the road, just kilometers away from the end. With less than 24 hours left, the clock is ticking for those still racing to finish within the time limit.

“It’s crunch time,” declared one cyclist, while his companion was already dreaming of a well-deserved beer at the finish.

Pain is now omnipresent, but that doesn’t stop participants from enjoying the experience.

“Our legs hurt, our knees ache, but we’re still enjoying it. The route is beautiful,” shared one rider, happy to have crossed breathtaking landscapes like those of the Beaujolais.

The hour of relief approaches

The last hurdle for the cyclists still on the course is to cross the final trilogy of climbs before descending toward Beaumont-lès-Valence. Emotions are at their peak, and fatigue is giving way to the satisfaction of nearly achieving the ultimate goal: finishing BikingMan Aura 2023.

This fourth day of BikingMan Aura 2023 saw the remaining participants tackle the crucial stages toward the finish line. Between physical pain and mental satisfaction, each cyclist faced challenges worthy of this demanding course. For many, it’s an inner journey concluding – a voyage through the landscapes of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, and through themselves. The leaderboard is nearly complete, and the race continues for the last brave souls still in it.

Emilien Mottet: a flawless race

Emilien Mottet, 28, managed this event with impressive mastery. From the start, he employed a simple yet effective strategy: push hard to gain an early lead and focus solely on his own race.

“Everything went as planned; the strategy worked like clockwork,” he shared upon arrival.

He explained that his goal was to distance himself from the others to avoid being influenced by their pace, and this tactic clearly paid off. Despite the accumulated fatigue, he stayed focused and managed to maintain a steady rhythm throughout the race.

“I must have been chased, but I just kept going at my own pace,” he said humbly, savoring his victory after a race free of major errors.

The complete podium: a battle for honor

Nearly two hours after Emilien’s arrival, his chasers also crossed the finish line, completing the podium for BikingMan Aura 2023. The second place went to Antoine Dumont, who knew he was far behind Emilien but gave his all to secure his position.

“The leader was untouchable, but I fought hard for second place, and that feels good,” Antoine shared, pleased with his effort.

The third place finisher, Jérémy Allinger, reflected on his doubts at the start of the race.

“At first, I wasn’t too focused; I was just riding my race. But when I saw I was in the top 10 at CP1, I thought, ‘Let’s see how far I can go.’ I shortened my breaks, and it paid off!” he said with a smile.

Mixed emotions for the top 10

Throughout the morning, the top 10 riders arrived one by one in Beaumont-lès-Valence, marked by their efforts but pleased with their performances.

“There’s a bit of disappointment about not finishing higher, but you don’t do these kinds of courses for the ranking. An ultra is, above all, a race against yourself,” said Guillaume Peyronnet, philosophically accepting the challenge.

The stories from the finish line were filled with moments of doubt and personal satisfaction. Some recalled the difficult moments, while others remembered euphoric nights when “nothing could go wrong,” as one participant put it.

“This is my fifth BikingMan, but this one gives me a special pride,” admitted another cyclist, who overcame numerous challenges, including persistent knee pain.

The final battles in the Vercors

While the podium was being decided at the front, another group of ultra-cyclists continued to battle through the final 50 kilometers. The Vercors, with its steep climbs, presented a last challenge before the finish.

“This is the last climb; we’re really happy,” shared one participant mid-ascent. Col de la Machine, known for its winding turns and steep inclines, tested the riders, but the promise of reaching Beaumont-lès-Valence kept them going.

“I enjoyed every bit; it was magnificent,” said Florent Dumas, visibly delighted with his journey across the three mountain ranges traversed during the event: the Massif Central, the Jura, and the Alps. This feeling of satisfaction was shared by many participants, despite the overwhelming fatigue.

“You can smell the stables – and the Pietra, that Corsican chestnut beer; that’s what’s keeping me moving!” joked another cyclist as he climbed toward Col de la Bataille.

The final climbs: Machine, Bataille, and les Mouches

For some, the end of the race was still a challenge, with the final series of climbs, dubbed the “double trilogy,” ahead. These last three ascents, passing through the remarkable Combe Laval, tested the riders’ endurance after nearly 1000 km of effort.

In the late afternoon, at kilometer 937, some cyclists paused in Pont-en-Royans to refuel and cool down. François Olivier, for instance, had his own technique for coping with the intense heat:

“I’ll show you how to handle the heat – I recommend it to everyone!” he said, sitting down in the water.

For others, the fatigue was becoming a serious concern.

“The legs, the backside, the knee… it’s a bit tough, but we’ll manage,” admitted one participant, determined to make it to the finish.

The finish line: a long-awaited moment

In Beaumont-lès-Valence, participants continued to arrive throughout the day. Each had a story to tell, a personal challenge to celebrate. The last third of the riders were still on the road, tackling the Grand Colombier or resting at checkpoint 2 before taking on the final kilometers.

“We’re heading through Porte, then down Colombier, and we’ll see where we stop. We’ve seen more cows than people; I think that’s the beauty of it,” said Jean-Philippe Martin, a cyclist taking things at his own pace, savoring every moment.

This third day of BikingMan Aura 2023 was marked by impressive performances, particularly by Emilien Mottet, the undisputed winner. With finishers arriving throughout the day and another night full of emotions ahead, the cyclists continued to face the challenges of this exceptional event. The top 20 is now complete, and we await the last finishers still on the course. The stories of each rider reflect the beauty and difficulty of this journey through Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

A freezing night and the first withdrawals

By Monday evening, around 11 p.m., most of the leaders had already passed the 400 km mark. Émilien Mottet maintained his lead with impressive consistency, while a small group of chasers stayed close behind, hoping to close the gap without taking too many risks.

“My goal is to get through the next challenges and then rest. This is an endurance race, and it really starts at 700 km. You have to know how to conserve energy,” shared one cyclist in the middle of the night.

However, the night didn’t go smoothly for everyone. At 5:13 a.m., news of a surprising withdrawal came in: Maximilien Couvreur, a favorite in the race, had dropped out. A top contender in the BikingMan Origin championship, Maximilien, sick and exhausted, decided to end his journey.

“I crossed paths with him during the night; he wasn’t feeling well. He had trouble digesting. Now it’s confirmed: he’s out. It’s a big blow for him, as he was here to score valuable points. He may have to turn to other stages in the championship to catch up,” explained Axel Carion.

Émilien Mottet tackles Grand Colombier

Despite Maximilien’s withdrawal, the race continued for the others, and at 8 a.m., Émilien Mottet reached checkpoint 2 in Villebois after 27 hours and 4 minutes of racing. Still as determined as ever, he took only a short break before setting out to conquer the next major challenge: Grand Colombier, a feared col reaching 1,500 meters in altitude.

“I’m feeling pretty good. I’ll avoid taking another break and try to get there as quickly as possible,” he shared before getting back on his bike.

The chasers arrived over two hours behind the leader.

“I decided to pace myself for this second day, without focusing too much on the others. Otherwise, you can burn out quickly,” said Jeremy Allinger, one of the cyclists aiming to keep a steady rhythm despite the grueling conditions.

“My goal is to finish by Wednesday morning. We’ll see if that’s doable,” shared Alexandre Meurillon.

The night had been especially tough on everyone. Between the biting cold and the sharp wind, some cyclists admitted they struggled.

“It was a horrible night. The wind was freezing; we spent most of the time descending in the cold. It was really challenging,” recounted Lorris Pasquier.

Grand Colombier: The ultimate test

The morning of the second day brought participants to the foot of Grand Colombier, one of the most feared climbs of BikingMan Aura. Nearly 16 km of uphill awaited them, with inclines reaching up to 20%.

“With a 32/36 cassette, that was definitely not the best choice,” admitted Lorris after laboriously climbing the col. For many, this climb was a true test of willpower.

Roland, an experienced cyclist who came to cheer on the participants, summed up the challenge of Grand Colombier:

“Getting up this hill is truly something incredible. I’ve climbed a lot of cols, but this one is unique. You could almost say you’d need horseshoes for the bikes!” he joked, humming La Bohème.

For some, the effort was so intense that they had to finish the ascent on foot.

“It’s simple: whether you’re on the bike or on foot, you move at the same speed. When you don’t have the right gear for climbing, you have to walk,” admitted one cyclist who had to dismount on the steepest sections.

A breathtaking landscape before the final stretch

At the summit of Grand Colombier, the view was spectacular. Cyclists enjoyed an unobstructed view of Lake Bourget as they prepared to descend toward the Vercors Regional Natural Park, where the race’s final challenges awaited. The upcoming trilogy of Chartreuse promised a conclusion as demanding as it was awe-inspiring.

“It’s beautiful here. But now, it’s on to the Vercors, and I know it’s going to be tough,” said one cyclist, resting at the summit of the col.

Meanwhile, participants further back in the peloton struggled to reach checkpoint 2 before nightfall. Among them was Thierry Rivaud, pacing himself to avoid burning out prematurely.

“A short nap, then a good descent toward history. After that, pizza and noodles to refuel. The goal: ride all night to reach CP2 by tomorrow afternoon and have two days left to finish,” he explained pragmatically.

A decisive second night

As night fell, participants still on the course braced for another difficult night. It would be a crucial night in determining the final ranking of BikingMan Aura 2023.

In the provisional standings, Émilien Mottet maintained a comfortable lead, several dozen kilometers ahead of his main chasers, Antoine Dumont and Jeremy Allinger. The top 10 seemed on track to reach the finish line at Beaumont-lès-Valence within the next few hours, but the race was far from over.

Conclusion of the day

This second day of racing was marked by moments of bravery, unexpected withdrawals, and monumental climbs. Grand Colombier tested the resilience of the cyclists, and despite the challenges, Émilien Mottet continued to dominate the race. The cyclists now prepared for another night, where the cold and fatigue could yet change the standings.

BikingMan Aura 2023 continues to prove itself a true test of physical and mental endurance. With climbs like Grand Colombier and freezing nights, the cyclists must show resilience to reach the finish line. The competition is still open, and the upcoming hours promise to be decisive.
