History and symbols of Brazil
Fifth largest country in the world, Brazil is also the only country to be crossed by both Equator and the tropic of the Capricorn. Its land occupies most of the eastern south-american coast, as well as a large portion of the inner territory. As a result, Brazil shares borders with all but 2 south-american countries: Ecuador and Chile.
Colonized by Portugal in the early 1500s and claimed independent in 1822, Brazil has retained portuguese as its language, being the only in South-America, and by far the largest portuguese-speaking population in the world. The Brazilian culture presents an extremely diverse and varied nature and can be best described as a multicultural society which has given birth to many worldly known festivals (Brazilian Carnival).
